been thinking and looking at geometric abstraction
what interests me are the following;

field versus figure on a white surface - one is edges, one isn't - one is static the other is more dynamic
line as thought versus a painterly fleshness
a diagram as a agent of change in the future versus the drawing as a trace of an act, a record of the past.
if I am creating works that are modernist, or clearly reference it what am I seeing? Is past, time an object a material in the artwork, i think so but what is it's nature. So it's not entirely formalist
surface - playing with planes levels disrupting those levels

nature of making - the practice

I am making fixed time for art - slowly negotiating a deal with myself
still not as productive as I want to be
also timetableing in time for writing - so that is also cool - generally not being so hard on myself .e.g. allowing myself to write in nice cafe and eat food at the same time.
finding that my state of mind and my state of body are far too interconnected, i become manic if i don't drink enough water or drink too much sugary stuff

This Mondrian is diagramatic but is still field - but is inbetween the two, which is cool.

got thinking about something I've always wanted to make, and started to make, it is light and less thought about. So, i'm happy about it. It fits with what I am doing which is great.

today i went walking around my hood again. It was curious to work out that the plastic sheeting in the rubbish tip areas are actually tent like structures that people sleep in. Found taking photos okay. People were generally friendly and i didn't feel threatened - people are really nice.

I like the hand made structures for drying clothes. like how things are tied. Like how they unintentionally make abstract paintings of layers of found board or tape over holes. purpose - where i just see abstract art.

Got confused again;

I wanted to paint or draw representationally again
maybe just draw bits that i like - like the repeated patterns of lamp post things, or the weave of the baskets, of observational drawings of tied things, like the elastic that they use.

Wanted to make things myself - but also want to draw stuff in a traditionally way - like colour and like mixing paint - but not sure if I should be painting of just taking photos??

I think way too much - and should be reading what other people say when they think about their practice.

I don't care that re looking at modernism is done to death. - there is more for me to do and that's all that counts.

interested in humanism - but I'm sort of a hypocrit - i don't like people really their mental space is too heavy on my brain, i like thinking about what they have left behind - their objects.

Just reading Myth: A very short introduction by Robert A. Segal.

On page 41 he talks about I - it and I - thou distinctions. As how we currently see the world as an 'it' not a person, but how in the past we saw the external world as a person. How interesting to think about this in the currently climate of using up the earths resources and pollution. Maybe we should start again to think or consider the world as a person that has needs and something we should respect, perhaps be fearful of as our negligence may cause the world to react negatively to us.

also linking to the French philosopher whos name I've totally forgotten who wrote about the modern city and how we conduct ourselves in the city scrificing our freedom for this imagined 'other' - this myth of the city as a person.

Big things or Small things

Been thinking about big gestures. The grand colour field paintings of abstract expressionism. Can't do it, tried it just doesn't fit with what I like. Feel like my works should be big but with pieces of paper and small lines they don't look right, they look tried to hard or pictures of pictures.

feel freer about making at the moment.

liking non functional things that look like they have a sort of purpose.

I like agnes martin but not the big paintings.

Feel like I should look at Richard tuttle again. - i like paint and I like paper, and wood and bits of string.

I don't to be avantgarde but backwards. Something old and reused - something stayed. I like rusted things. Everything is new - everybody is buying new reusable bags. I don't see old bags - just new reusable ones.

this one was drawing a large square then drawing a smaller square inside then rubbing out the larger square.

it's too light and not interesting enough - too much field

but there to still two ideas in it and I want one

like the way the lines of the curved ones don't quite meet - this is another work

i can't see this image - but think it is the black one - i like it - but it's too field and not enough diagram

photography cuts rectangular shaped holes from the world

drawing floats in a space that isn't of this world - our cerebral space - a space that believes that acts as if it is untouchable by the physical world

the internet is the same as the drawing - images float on pages - in a space that is protected by screens (we look at it through computer screens - inside this protected infinite heaven space - a space where we believe we can live forever - that's why facebook accounts of people who have died are so strange so incomprehensible - i don't want to see them because it confirms my mortality even in this space where life appears to be infinite.

so many things to cut down on

into fleshy crapness of paint at the moment

trying to do one idea at a time

some of them are still too many things going on

but trying to maintain the agency of the diagram and not just be purely formalist though i am interested in the formalism of it - but there has to be the possibility of change - of it causing something

still so many things to figure out

i feel as if i am trying to bring the disparate bits of my practice together

feeling positive about it

some drawings seem pretty - i'm really unhappy about this

still got to figure out about border - edges

i like photography's crop - and like how drawings float in space - but want to try out some lines where they reach the edge of the paper

this also allows me to bring in the photographic abstracts too -

how could i make them real? physical?

reading about modernism or new modernism - not sure what i think -

i'm happy with how my practice is going so that is the main thing

i'm not interested in being perpetually avant garde - if this has already happened (new modernism)- oh well - I'm not a following fashion

I just tried to make modernist infinite fields - interesting as it made me realise that this isn't my practice

created a small book of lines - i'm trying to record as many different lines and arrangement of lines

keep thinking about statements like "ideas abandon too soon" "lacks rigor" - these are motivational and help reflection

like building sites as there is change - temporarility about them

like the whiteing out of lines as disrupts space of the picture, adds depth but is also on a surface above the line

like the dotted line as this is something provisional, something that will happen in the future

was trying to get a system with the lines, drawn with a ruler and had to have corner and not touch the other lines

added more broken lines but they looked better whited out

really like the grey

reminds me of concrete

many buildings in the old town have their windows and doors filled in with grey concrete so no one can live in them - to prepare them for demolition

wanted to add red as important

want to do one with just grey lines - like the fleshy crappiness of the painted lines

think this one as too much going on in it - not sure - may get trashed.

been looking at blinky palermo and there is a red rectangles on white that he made this sort of relates to that and some other diagrams that i saw

interested in how the dotted lines could be more independent of the red circles

i like the energy, dyanmism of the arrows - reminds me of deluge by da vinci and gordan matta clarks arrow drawings.

Can't decided about the "visual pleasure" of them. But, I think too much and now is not a time to reflect or contextualise too much but a time to make.

they are all very small but may make them bigger - do larger ones with greater range of detail and with some thick and thin lines and lines of different colour or tone.

cut lines instead of drawn lines - getting away from the trace of the human gesture, but still unable to escape from it as the real trace is the cut and the placement.

with the first one I was just exploring cutting and layering. I like how the light made the lines.
with the second I wanted to lift off the surface by adding a different tone - not sure about it here but another avenue to explore.
the third one i like. I like the sparseness but need to have some longer lines - too many of the lines are all the same
with the 4th I wanted to explore density and a bit more energy - prefer in real life holding as you can move it in the light creating different amounts of shadow. In this one it was interesting to cut off the lines that extended beyond the frame [photography's influence]

capitalism and being an artist

Couple of days ago started thinking about selling artwork - why do it?

Throughout history the artist has by and large been subservient to wealthy patrons e.g. Medici. The artist has created artworks that are now collateral in our banks. These banks exist not for the safe keeping of our money but to maintain the status quo, a status quo where the gap between rich and poor is increasing. To take another slant, we proport that life is freer 'the free west' but we at every corner relinquish our freedom, for example the right to demonstrate. I can demonstrate but face possibly deportation, loss of earnings, and none coverage of any medical inquiry arising from demonstrating. I am labelled with many different numbers. My ability to live outside of society is near impossible. It is possible, many we regard as drunks, or drop outs, do live to a large degree outside the regulations of society. A society that is increasingly fitting into the model of a city life. The city with many regulations that control people to a much greater degree than in the countryside.

Now the artist is ever increasingly emulating the business man, or the corporate culture; web site, resume, corporate clients. Public Art, another slant, on how artists serve business. The site on which public art is placed increases in value. Artists themselves move into studios where they are a property developers dream, they again increase the property value and get kicked out for higher paying businesses to move in. Artists again another cog of the capitalist business model.

Even now after the financial crisis, governments are ineffectual in transforming the system to benefit the majority of the populous. There are many compelling reasons to support the financial industry but on a true playing field business that fail should be allowed to fail, (not thrown money at), therefore allowing better perhaps more cautious business to come to the forefront in the situation.

The artist a willing participant in this game of commercialism. I hate private views of my own work. I wait around chat to people, the power is not in my hands. Waiting around for someone to snap up my work. I will know nothing of this rich person who can do whatever they like with my cared for artistic babies. Should i now continue to sell my artwork? Let it be possible colateral in a bank vault? No, maybe I should just give them away to whoever I consider should have them. A real connection. A real exchange.

pleased with how things are going at the moment. art wise feel much clearer. Time away from rest of the world is hard but does make a difference.

this is only part of it - as i couldn't fit all of it onto the scanner but it communicates enough. i liked the curved of the paper and then the stick attachments really worked for me - there are only three which made it super cool.

This is Pia's photo which she gave to me when she left China. I really love it as an object with the removal of the surface at both top and bottom and the slightly folded corners. Feel that it is important

gone back to diagrams again but looking forward to having some more fun photographing them.

Like the contrast between selecting areas of composition for the photos and the page framing things for me in the actual diagrams.

Using a Chinese account book that has lots of rip out pages I have been cutting them up and rearranging them. I see several abstract artists in my head when I make them. Not just Martin but Mondrian too. But, something different from Mondrian. Want to try to add some colour maybe this blue that I keep wanting to use.

Inbetween these works I went back to some hand drawn family tree like diagrams. Can't decide if I want to use serious colour in these or just to stick to greys and creams. Not sure.

sort of feel that I am constantly wobbling between the clinical humanless (but human - a contradition I know but bit like the photorealists in a way) and the fragile falable human line. Also, have same problem with colour - keep wanting to add riotus joyous colour but generally don't like the results - it doesn't have the inside of a church emptiness sort of feel that I want ... most of the time.

Really feel happy today as re-looked and thought about Suprematism, specifically Malevich.

I am particularily interested in the white on white series - for the floatingness.

I'm interested in this extremely sensitivity, banality, where nothing is done but so much is said. There is something really important, to me, about this cool white on the warm ground. The other way around isn't the same at all.

Well what I am getting at is..... this play with surface, pure geometry is something that I am doing in the installations, in the diagrams + with the photographs. I feel that Suprematism is a sort of anchor to my practice - stopping me from going off too far on wild overly imaginative jaunts (which I have a tendency to do do). I don't feel that my work is just about geometry, it is about reducing words and symbols to the level of geometry, about leading the viewer into it and leaving them no where.

Today, like yesterday I was struck by how much I liked the debris around rubbed out pencils lines, or just the effect before you brush away or the tiny pieces of used up rubber. Sort of reminds me of ploughed fields.

Went on to do lots of lines. Trying to generate space, but a subtly too. Not such much vanishing point but lines going across akin to lined paper, but not as regular. Keep thinking of SciFi movies for some reason. Anyway partly pleased with todays piece. Again I am going back to diagrams on paper as apposed to works that are purely photographs in their own right.

Though these look perspectival, the camera is just on the surface paper. The work is just lines going across the page with a rectangle or a square at each lines end.

Rather liked the white on the cream paper. The white paint that I have isn't white enough for my white paper, comes out cream and not the coolness that I want. On cream paper it works fine. This moves me on nicely to my next post.

Today was quite productive. I didn't make anything that made me go wow but I feel as if I was able to clarify some things. I think I'm trying to play with plans of colour / tone generating depth like Rothko did but do it in photography too. I found this by cutting sections out and then overlaying them on other colours but it wasn't enough. It was much better where there were more layers or that the colour underneath was also above.

I got into cutting into shapes where the inside dictated the outside. But, still with the same arrangement liked the architectural landscape view as well as the top down flat abstract plan view. Can't figure that out or whether I have to (decide on one or the other).

Then I got really into the black paper and started scoring into the paper. I liked how these lines were not physical and easier to see when photographing along the surface of the paper. I worked on top with pencil small squares. It was cool because I was into them as objects, the photography had inspired the actual diagram as apposed to the other way around - making something to be photographed. The black paper diagram curvy line thing was really cool because in the light it changed, you had to hold and move it to see what was good about it - it would be crap in a frame. Would be good on the floor where you could walk around it.

Also been reading a lot of Flusser today - but more on that another day.......... tbc perpetually.....

Progress

currently giving myself 1/10 for progress. Not really pleased with my images. I did some more with string yesterday but not crazy about them.

I have been checking out Paul Sietsema's images on the internet. I saw and really liked one of his videos at the Berlin Beinialle last year. I couldn't see enough of his drawings, but liked the simplicity of them, and the foundness of them. Still feel that I have something different to contribute. Though I like found stuff, sometimes I find the sentimentality attached to them an aesthetic that makes me cringe, and a strange sort of insipid kitsch.

Today is going to be super art day. Mainly going to be cutting things, and less photographing, I think, but I just can't help it, even if the light isn't perfect I still want to photo beautiful arrangements. Looking forward to buying more paper, as today I have to use up all my paper - but in a painfully minimal way that feels that I haven't finished.

Pop Life - personal reflection - (on a review of it)

It was so pleasing to read this review. Sorry I haven't seen the exhibition, in the wrong continent, or right one depending on your location and desire to see the show. I was pleased with how, according to the review Pop Art was continued from the historically confirmed Pop Art period of Warhol to the present day Hirst's diamond encrusted skull. It felt good to finally see condensed in words how commodity and commercialism really have been something pervasive and present in the art works produced recently. Personally as an artist I have always found the pressure to brand myself and produce work that fitted nicely into a box frustrating and some how an antithesis to what I considered being an artist involved.

I got tired of the obvious tricks being used in a lot of contemporary art, visual puns that are words based or the blunt conjoining of two things e.g. diamonds and a skull /wealth + death.

It is about time for something new, something more considered more subtle with an positivity other than wealth seeking. I know the art world is all about money, but for artists like myself who actively decided to stop making artwork that was commercially successful to seek something else (and not the only one), it is about time there was some sort of transition from, or re-equaluation of this, or at least more writing from this point of view. I felt that Cumming's review did acknowledge this. Recently I went to an artists/designers talk, one of the speakers said, no artist now makes art 'after working in the paddy field all day', but in reality the majority of artists I know all have jobs to support their art work. We talk about 'professional artists' where we expect the word professional to mean that they make money from it, we should obviously not consider earning money from their art as validity of their role as an artist in society.

I want to go back to the quote "composed of fast art: nothing to detain you for long". We need to consider how the internet is affecting us, changing us. Personally I love the internet and have to fight off my surfing addiction. As good as it is, our attention spans are changing, we all have ADHD, flicking from one window to the next. I doubt anyone has read to this part of this post (I doubt I would have). Things around us are not faster, our duration of focus has changed. Things are not considered, conversations are text messages. Please don't think of me as an old fuddy duddy conservative seeking stop change at all costs, but think of me as someone who wants you to see slow life - consideration - empty space, as something new that we can earth to allow us to look at the world with fresh eyes.

with this picture i drew lines on the paper first but then felt that there needed to be layers, more depth so I cut sections out. Now the lines are edges as well as lines on the paper. This one again refers to the Suprematists.

This one was just cut up bits of black paper. I was interested in the arrangement and if i up the contrast of the image using photoshop the space or depth would have been flattened more so imperceptable. this one really needs to be in a post of its own. It doesn't work surrounded by other images. I like the human quality of these lines, which is a contrast to my normal ruler lines.

this one i liked because, hopefully at a first glance it is a cross then you can see that the pencil line travels over the paper.

suprematists

Got really into the Suprematists today. I especially liked Malevich's Suprematism with Eight Rectangles because it was so simple and because it has so much potential for my own work. I'm imagining remaking it or many variations by laying red rectangles on a white piece of paper and then photographing it. This way playing with surface and depth.

Getting all excited about folded paper and lines going over them today. Printed of Flusser to read - so I can write some thoughts about. Feel good about getting into drawings relationship to photography - the real versus the representation - this works with my installations too so that is cool. Some of today's explorations.

Will need to do some more homework/research on getting my white balance right. Still dealing with some dust on my image sensor - frustrating.

thinking about Richard tuttle too - the wire shadow work - will have to explore this too at somepoint - also want to get a film camera and do some more drawing on the film - it is cheap to do this stuff over here in China :-)

Had a good making day today. Went to art shop and bought some more different kinds of paper so more exploration tomorrow. Really happy about the unresolved problem between the photograph and the object, the drawing, feels great that I have this 'thing' or problem.

I got into cutting holes in paper. I love where I make my art / take photos (same thing) the light is awesome.

I was thinking about the shcontemporary art fair today. I like anthony gormleys drawing things, though I get a bit hmm about famous artists who do public art sculptures but i liked his paper stuff. Also another Chinese artist who had done some wonderful pencil diagonal grid lines. I liked them a lot too.

How to make art work while doing other things? Is it a perspective thing? Looking for things searching things out while in different environments. As I sit at my desk surrounded by a semin comprehensible noise of Chinese what images, patterns and shapes should I pull out? Can I get away with making some diagrams in my sketchbook under the watchful eye of )the very nice and helpful but the representation of authority) security guard? I so don't know, but maybe now is a good time to try.

Just been reading about women in china who blog very interesting and inspired me to write about what i experience here as a female and an artist.

Internet Dating Chinese Style

Recent received first message from a guy on a dating site. I love the punchy straight to the point first line.

"I like you and want to marry you,do you want marry me too?"

Then followed by a brief education CV starting with primary school.

Then a long list of character traits, including the awesome "team spirity". Contact details then a no pressure final line as follows.

"do you want to marry me this year?my parents and my sister hope me get marriage this year,too."

Amazing!
Will have to meet him just for the experience.
None of this "get to know each other first", or "see how it goes".

speech - when to say and when not to say

Just been listening to some Chomksy talking on youtube. I am interested in the question of freedom of speech. Do I have the right to say things that would cause the death of many others, even if my hand is not the cause of their death, but the result of the context in which I speak? The site of the utterance I have already discussed being the underlying content rather than the content.

Thoughts - propoganda

I was thinking about freedom of speech again today. It is obviously important to be able to freely express your opinions. But, at the same time things like the MMR scare illustrate the power of comment, and the lack of criticality in the general public. The press in the west is not 'free' we pay for it, and they write and cover what the general public is interested in, and its reportage manner is generally lacking in complexity, whether that be in-depth / historically or contextually based.

Has there been a survey of the type of vocabulary used in left newspapers over the last 20 years and how has its difficulty/accessibility has changed.

Is there any relation between freedom and speech and consumerism?

I am living in China and i like it here, but freedom is speech is not the same. It is not really what I say, but where it is said, what context it is placed, who I am saying it to. Or, rather who really is my intended audience. There are similarities in the UK, there are many things I can't do, for example read out a list of the soldiers who had died in the Iraq war anywhere near Whitehall (I can't remember whether this is still the case). But, ridiculous as it is or was it was very real. There is thought and things said that aren't in awe of China's government here.

In the UK, I also felt that there were things that I could not say. The power of shared Nationhood is just as powerful, but the consequence may well be different. The construction of political correctness, the UK's idealism of multiculturalism and individualism, ironically is its national heart that is not to be criticised. How does that fit with freedom of speech? The UK's multiculturalism is represented as still something that is subservient to the state, brought about because of those in power. The balance of power is still, what the government/controlling authorities can do for you (they hold the power + control + decision making) and not what the people can do for themselves and there country.

Anyway I am especially interested in looking at how the Chinese and UK government bodies promot themselves in the building up to 2010 and 2012.
So far we have the Olympics with the torch hand over illustrating the two differing attitudes to the construction and maintainance (perpetuation) of the myth of the nation state.

Still have image work relationship problems, but not overly worried about it. Feel a bit like a documentary maker who adds fake animal noises to his/footage to make it more interesting, but obviously not authentic.

throwing money down the hole

Then Pia throw some money down the hole and I photographed it.

Then I made an art bank note with one art and drew an odd picture of a person on one side.

Pia took the money that was in the hole to the bank (another form of hole) and also handed in the art bank note. This was not accepted but also just returned to the payer in without comment.

When creating a floor based installation I generally put something near the entrance to activate the space and prepare the viewer for the transformation of the perceived scale of the hole.
In the studio space I decided to put something on the ground that aggressively engaged the viewer when they entered the space. So I made a big hole.

Then I found a ladder. This was great as now you could climb into the hole and scary things could get out of it and chase you.

Under the bench there was a great collection of wires. I drew this and put it back where I got it from. Sort of a sign post to show someone what I had seen and liked.

This bird cage things is gross. But I found its presence fascinating. When I was exploring the floor I want to somehow add it to my map or disrupt is natural locating on the floor. So I put small squares of paper under it. But I noticed that this brought out the shadows it was casting on the floor and the wall. This photo is taken at another time of day when you can't see the shadow, but its trail is present. I liked how it was a logical system but without the shadow was less understandable.

decided to start measuring things because i found a cool tape measure in the space.

Decided to focus on measuring how close things were to the edge, in case they fell off.

Firstly, I had to find objects that were movable
Secondly, I then had to find and edge for them to fall off.

Ok, so I have now reverted to turning things upside down. Things now look much better.

Lisa's box is fascinating. Partly because its contents due to the avant-garde expat interior design refurbishment are now inaccessible. It now has the pillow tower carefully balanced in a Yin and Yang Feng Shui compliant manner. Everything will shortly be sanitised of any unmoral tendencies but any opulence with doubtful moral standing will be overlooked.

At home I had been continuing my diagrams and this systemisation of space was and is something that is still fascinating me. But also a world without people, void of them. But, also destroyed by them. That statement feels right but I can't make sense of it. How can a diagram a greyness be void of people but also contain within it their destruction or a destruction of something by people.

Residency at the Studio

ok, so first day was yesterday. I arrived feeling very uncreative. In the space were two female individuals who's attention was placed inside another spacial dimension, one the computer screen (the back lit world, someone else said this first), two, the internet within that screen, and three, the sound scape produced by putting headphones on. I was stuck in the actual space of the room, as my ipod had run out of battery.
Then searching inside my bag, my personal private only particially visible space found the things that I had previously remembered placing in there and some new ones which I had forgotten were there. Out of their hidding place I took out some paper and various drawing impliments. Then started to investigate the space. I had thought previously of thinking of the space as an science project tracking who and what is in it, or what could be here as the furniture in the room is at odds with its actual usage. This sort undercover investigation science project is the mind set that I entered the space with. I wanted to hide things in the space. Conceal things.
